A Fishing Village -- Photo for the Day

Even during the winter season I enjoy visiting fishing villages along the coastal regions of South Korea.  I look forward to spring and the renewal and reawakening of life.  I especially look forward to being on the water.

To view some of my work with water and the sea, take a look at some of my archived projects at my website.  Specifically, my projects titled, The People of the Mud and The Boats of Suncheon Bay, can be seen here.

Photo for the Day: Water Falling Stop Action

Later in 2014 I will publish more of my Water and the Sea project.  I'm drawn to water by its beauty and its mystery.

Must Love Reading -- Photo for the Day

Nothing will stop a person who loves to read from reading.  I saw this scene a couple of days ago, and I knew that I had to stop everything else I was doing to photograph this scene.  It has become one of my favorites for personal reasons.

Crowning Achievement -- Photo for the Day

It isn't often the skies over South Korea are so blue these days.  There are a number of reasons for this, but I will leave that for another day.  I found this gem at a rest stop located somewhere between Gwangyang and Suncheon.

A Bird's Nest - Photo For the Day

One recent weekend found me walking near Waon Beach, which is near the city of Suncheon in Jeollanam-do.  As is almost always the case, my wife and I were the only people in the area.  Regardless, I felt it necessary to take a short detour to answer the call of nature.

As I took in my new surroundings, I saw this bird nest:

I wasn't aware of any birds nearby, plus I didn't venture any closer to the nest once I saw the structure.  It was a small nest, smaller than my clenched fist.  Also, it was at about the level of my chin, hence I could not see if there were any eggs in the nest or not.

Does anyone know which species of bird might have built this nest?

The Tracks of Time -- Photo for the Day

What existence have I except for that which I have dreamt?  What reality have I except for that which I have hoped?  What time have I except for that which I have conceptualized?

Mankind claims time is merely an illusion, because it was created by mankind itself.  As if man intimately knows the bounds of the universe...

Time is measured?  No, it is experienced.  One after the other.  One on top of another.  Not to be understood, but to be experienced.

Gutter's End - Photo for the Day

So where does all that water flow during the rain?  To the end of the gutter, of course.

The Horizon is the Photo for the Day

As the Northern Hemisphere slowly tilts its way to the winter solstice, cold weather has arrived in so many areas already.  It snowed it Suncheon very early this morning, and I had to pour hot water on my gate handle so I could exit our property.

At that moment I was reminded of our most recent visit to the Philippines - the only ice around were the cubes to keep the drinks cool.

Photo For the Day: The Old Dam

My wife and I enjoy taking walks, and sometimes we find pleasant places to rest.  Such was the case this past 추석 holiday season when we spotted this old dam late in the afternoon.  While my wife napped, I set up my tripod along the edge of the rocky stream.

When I photograph a scene that requires a long exposure time, I will use the tripod and snap the shot using a shutter release cable.  Additionally, I will lock-up the camera's mirror to further ensure there isn't any wobbling or shaking during the exposure.

Photo For the Day: Home From the Harvest

In a previous post titled, "Pool and Trail", I wrote that fisherfolks from the fishing villages located on the coasts of South Korea use a special sled to travel the mudflats during low tide.  "Home From the Harvest" shows a fisherman returning to the home shore after collecting seafood from one of the farms that is exposed during the low tide.

This photograph was composed one late autumn afternoon in October 2011.  The harvesters easily communicate with one another despite the distances since voices carry well along the flats.  They often sing and joke one with another.  It is not uncommon for harvesters to ham it up for those who are photographing them while at work.

"Home From the Harvest" is a part of an article that was written about my longitudinal study of Suncheon Bay.  The is found at the Groove Magazine website here.

If I were a videographer, I would be able to share the poignant scenes of how the younger sledders far out pace the older sledders whose struggle to reach the shores before night fall is obvious.

Photo for the Day - Pool and Trail

I prefer the working side of Suncheon Bay (순천 만) to the orchestrated tourist side of the bay.  In my view, the fishing areas and the fishing villages located on the bay, or in the bay itself, provides the most interesting photographic compositions.

The tidal flow is extreme in South Korea as can be seen in Pool and Trail.  The low tide allows fisherfolks and harvesters to travel the mudflats using a special sled to gather whatever seafood is being cultivated.  The man made pools that generously dot the shoreline serves different purposes, and if one happens to have any sea creatures left behind as the tide recedes, then that is all the better.

Photo For the Day - Observation Post

I don't imagine many people will be out and about today in South Korea thanks to Typhoon Sanba.  The wind and the rain brought back memories of our trip to the Philippines, and the many photographic opportunities presented by that beautiful land.

Observation Post was taken at Pristine Beach in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, the Philippines.
